LEGO Rock Raiders Review
Okay, I admit that Rock Raiders may not bring the same rock-em-sock-em effects as a Star Wars or Star Trek game but I promise you that you will just as much fun. Lego’s has been around for generations and never failed to bring limitless smiles and possibilities to the young and young at heart. It once again has proved why it remains timeless and ageless with all of its products.
As the story opens you find our Lego buddies in a real quandary! The Raiders are on a space ship, damaged and hurling through the universe. After a long ride through the heavens you find yourself smack in the middle of a foreign planet and believe me, this is not a friendly planet by any means! Once you land you find that you must mine energy crystals as well as ores to enable you to recharge your ship and be back in business. This is going to be a challenge as you are going to find some obstacles at just about every turn of the adventure. You have to successfully complete 18 levels before you have enough to have a fully charged ship and each level has its own obstacles to complete. You must collect red and green energy crystals as well as rescue a few trapped Raiders along the way. This by the way was one of my favorites part of the game. There is something so hapless and helpless about those “little dots for eyes” guys that you can’t help but smile. Each of your Rescue team players has his own special ability and can be used to help you to finish a level successfully. This is one feature I especially like as it helps a young player learn about choices. They will soon learn that one Raider may be better for a situation, like mining energy, while another may be a better pick such as one who can may a jet fly faster than speed itself. It really lends to the play as it asks that the player use strategy to finish the level, instead of depending on luck.
Install: N/A
Gameplay: 7.5
Gameplay throughout this game pretty much stays on the easy level but this by no means makes the gameplay any less fun. While each level is easy enough to finish it still takes a great deal of strategy and skill. This is one of those games that may not be the most challenging but still remains full to play from start to finish.
Graphics: 8.0
Graphics are excellent from everything to vehicles to the rocks themselves. I know they are just rocks but Lego has managed to give some great dimension to them allowing them to be distinguishable from each other. The Raiders are cute and well done also. Background has a dark look to it, but as it is supposed to take place in space it is perfect.
Sound: 7.5
The sound was good and clear. The characters do not have a lot of dialogue and it is pretty limited to what sounds like grunts and assents but nevertheless it still fits in with the game. A hint here: listen for the step sounds, they are really something! Also your standard splash sounds from water and other sound effects from everyday sounds are clear and realistic.
Difficulty: 7.0
As in gameplay, it pretty much stays on an even keel of easy but still remains fun to play. Depending on the age playing it can be a little more difficult for a younger player than older but either way still requires some strategy.
Concept: 7.5
The concept is good and most of all clear. You know from the beginning what your mission is. The game also lends a hand in explaining to players how to accomplish it. It encourages the player to think on his own while enjoying the challenge.
Multiplayer: 6.5
While this is an option I thought it was a great slower than playing one on one. Scene to scene seemed to load very slowly and since a Multiplayer involves playing on the same screen instead of individual ones, the whole game really slowed down.
Overall: 8.0
When I began my review I applauded Lego for a job well done and I guess that is how I will finish the review. The game is put together very nicely but the one factor which really stands out for me is the way that Lego challenges the player themselves to think about their every move.
