Panzer Front Review

Panzer Front aims at the most serious strategy gamers. For example you have to plan your battlefield layout. You place your infantry where you want them as well as your antitank guns. While at the same time you have to be aware of the enemy's battle layout. Like chess but with guns. The concept of this game is excellent however there are too many details to make the game fun for everyone. Controlling the tank is really not the issue here because you can most certainly drive around shooting everything in sight but you can never seem to manage a successful mission while doing that. The problem lies where the strategy begins. For example there is a map that comes onto the screen when you hit the start button. On this map is where you lay out your battle plan. But there is nothing to show you how to do this or that the map is even there. The only way to figure it out is just by messing with it and pressing buttons. There is a tutorial but the only thing it shows you is how to control the tank, which is about the easiest thing to figure out on this game. The game play is slow, like playing a board game or something, and you will probably loose interest before you have even mastered the controls.

If they had a multiplayer option it could be a little more tolerable. Someone to go head to head with besides the gaming console opponent. Sometimes it's just more enjoyable battling against someone who knows as much about the game as you do unlike an opponent who already knows how to use everything. On the missions that you go on the enemy is already where they want to be and they're just waiting for you. You can never sneak up on them. So all that you really do with your tank in this game is trade shots with other tanks hoping that you have the better aim. Not really the most action packed game. The other tanks that are part of your team are almost no help what so ever. They seem to be there just to give the enemy something else to shoot at thus keeping you alive a little longer. All they do is leave you behind while you're in a shoot out with the enemy and rush out to make themselves targets down field so by the time that you get there you're the only one in your team still truckin’. There are plenty of missions to keep you busy for quite some time if you stick with it long enough. The battles are based mostly on the World War II era but gradually move though the years with several choices of tanks in many different countries.

The sound leaves something to be desired. The music is your standard military music with, drums, flutes, and trumpets, and all that non-exciting stuff. There is also no audio dialog to support the game. It would be easier take your orders if you could hear them. The dialog shows up written at the bottom of the screen. It makes it difficult to follow your orders without inviting an antitank missile into your cab.

The graphics are OK at times but overall it lacks Playstation’s potential capabilities. On a positive note the creators of this game did a spectacular job recreating the historically authentic tanks in this game. Such tanks as the American T69E3 or the Shortbull which had to have four tracks to support it's weight, or the Russian, NC 152 and CY 122C, or the German E-79 and the Aureole which has a gas turbine engine on the back to make it extremely quick and mobile. Though this game has a few neat things to mention I would only recommend this game to the most serious war strategy enthusiast. As for the rest, steer clear.
