Cabela's Big Game Hunter Ultimate Challenge Review
The idea of the game is to successfully complete hunts to unlock other area hunts. As you complete each one, you can try and hunt another. You can stalk your prey in 8 different locations, Alberta, Alaska, Montana, Missouri, Newfoundland, Colorado, Texas, and Nebraska. More than a dozen non-game animals also populate the different regions. You can hunt over 12 big game animals and outfit yourself with 15 guns and 3 bows, not to mention over two dozen of other pieces of hunting equipment to help you bag that next trophy. Check out the trophy room, which displays the hunter's game and stats.
Sounds like that great fix during the non-hunting season doesn't it? Well it all sounds good but this title does nothing more than remind you on how frustrating hunting can be, and I don't mean the actual hunt.
You have to outfit yourself with various calls, weapons, survival gear, tags etc. This game you have to watch your health so you are not airlifted out of the woods because you are too weak to go on. Ok fair enough it can happen and sometimes does, but not after two hours into a hunt even equipped with all the down filled garb for those cold weather conditions. (I can't recall the last time I spent 60+ bucks in the woods before lunch just to stay alive) To say that one has to eat rations (at 20 bucks a pop) and drink water from a hydrator (more cash) with in two hours is plain silly. Oh yeah you better rest so you better bring your tent along. (Whatever happened to catching a snooze in your tree stand or blind?) or just not moving through the woods? Is that not rest? You can only carry so much in your pack but this gets ridiculous. You can only pack 3 rations of food and 3 of water, but you have unlimited ammo. Then to add insult to injury, a tent takes up the same amount of space in your pack as a small bottle of scent.
You do get to drive an ATV around to save on some of the walking, which is a good thing, but the map to help you navigate is terrible. No resemblance to a topographical map what so ever. I did like all the supplies you could choose from. Just about everything you can imagine. I would have liked to see a range finder on the binoculars but other than that, you can find everything you need to outfit your self in the store. Though hunters will try just about every gimmick that they think will help them bag the big one, in all honesty in the real world you don't need most of it. It is fun trying out different things though.
I have been hunting for some 18 years now, and I just feel that the developers could have improved on the game if they consulted some hunters with some real experience. Then again, I guess this just could be a marketing ploy to make you think you really need to go to Cabela's to buy all this stuff. Heads Up…. You don't!
Gameplay: 6
Too much time involved if you forget something and have to go back.
Graphics: 7
Average at best
Sound: 6.5
Could have had better sound
effects especially the rattling antlers.
Difficulty: 9
Many levels of difficulty. You
can outfit yourself with various supplies that can add to the difficulty as
well.
Concept: 7
I can see their idea of really
getting involved with every little thing when it comes to hunting. In my
opinion it was a bit much and took away from the enjoyment of hunting.
Multiplayer: N/A
Overall: 6.8
Needs work, but had a few good ideas.
